The Fictionals team-up with acclaimed authors at Vancouver Writers Fest 2019 on October 23

The worlds of Comedy and Literature collide when The Fictionals and Vancouver Writers Fest team up for two shows on Granville Island on Wednesday, October 23! Come to one or both and see us share the stage with some of Canada’s acclaimed authors!

The Fictionals Build Your Own Adventure at Vancouver Writers Fest 2019

Our first show is Build Your Own Adventure on October 23 from 1 to 2:30 pm at Performance Works (1218 Cartwright Street). Advanced tickets are on sale now!

Watch new stories unfold in front of your eyes as three warm, imaginative YA authors team up with improv comedy group The Fictionals. Audience members will enjoy readings from Aviaq Johnston’s adventure story based on Indigenous mythology, Those Who Dwell Below, spoken word poems from Taran Kootenhayoo, and anecdotes from Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me author, Mariko Tamaki. Then, The Fictionals will create brand new stories for students to enjoy—all the while learning how to use their imagination in new and powerful ways to create ideas right on the spot!

Our second show is Improv x Literature on October 23 at 8:30 pm at The Revue Stage (1601 Johnston Street). Advanced tickets are on sale now!

A creative, side-splitting mashup of books and comedy. Known for their hilarity, Tanya Boteju (Kings, Queens and In- Betweens), Dina Del Bucchia (It’s a Big Deal!) and Andrew Kaufman (The Ticking Heart) will read from their latest works before improv comedy group The Fictionals create a skit inspired by each story. Then, enjoy a reading from Retail Nightmares host Alicia Tobin’s So You’re A Little Sad, So What? before an unscripted, long-form comedy jam sure to keep you roaring.

Presented in partnership with the Master of Publishing (MPub) program at SFU.

Improv X Literature on January 24 pays tribute to Vancouver’s Little Free Libraries!

Building community, sparking creativity and inspiring readers! We’re big fans of Little Free Libraries you see in your neighbourhood, and on January 24 we pay tribute with Improv X Literature aka By The Book!

The first Little Free Library was built by Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin. The model of a one-room schoolhouse was a tribute to his mother, a teacher who loved to read. There are over 50,000 Little Free Libraries, each unique and sharing the theme of exchanging good books and bringing people together.

Vancouver has dozens of Little Free Libraries, filled with novels, magazines, and children’s books looking for good homes! Each are lovingly maintained by book lovers, and restocked by readers looking to pass along a good stoy. We visited a few this past week to collect some fun books to share at Cafe Deux Soleils. Maybe they will find a new home during the show too!

Whether you’re a longtime bibliophile or looking for something to read on the Skytrain, join us on January 24 for Improv X Literature! Doors at 7:30 pm, show at 8:00 pm, and tickets just $7 or $5 for students! More info on Hot Improv Tuesdays here!
